Types of systemic lupus
Exist four main types of lupus: systemic lupus erythematosus, discoid lupus erythematosus, drug-induced lupus erythematosus, and neonatal lupus erythematosus. One of the autoantibody finding in systemic lupus erythematosus is the anticardiolipin antibody, which can cause a false positive test for syphilis. Those with more serious illness involving damage to internal organ may require high doses of corticosteroids in combination with other medications that suppress the body’s immune system.
People with lupus are more vulnerable to infection because both the disease and its treatments weaken the immune system. Women who have antiphospholipid antibodies (such as cardiolipin antibodies, lupus anticoagulant, and false-positive tests for syphilis/RPR) should not take estrogens or birth-control pills because of the risk of blood clotting. Lupus can affect many parts of the body, including the joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels, and brain.
